Colour Perception User study on a Website

Challenge

This project explores the effects of color relations when used in design technology. The task was to explore how pleasant the different color schemes are and how different color relations affect subjects’ short term memory of the content on a web page.

Process

The process contained literature research and the information gathered was then used in order to create two different websites with two different color schemes, one with similar color combination and the other one with dissimilar. The websites were then evaluated by users.

Solution

Memory performance was slightly higher for the usage of the similar color themed website as compared to the dissimilar coloured website. This confirms previous research showing that similar color schemes result in better memorability and suggests that the theory may be applicable to the context of website interaction. However, the results were far from significant according to all tests, and no definite conclusion can be drawn. The color palette of similar colors was perceived as most pleasant by all participants. This is consistent with previous research, stating that ratings of color preference and harmony are often based on hue similarity.
