The Robin Hood Calculator

Challenge

We had the opportunity to collaborate with the non-profit venture Gapminder supervised by the head of software, Angie Hjort, to create an interactive information visualization using a combination of JavaScript, D3, React, and Git.

Process

Our project aimed to investigate how the daily income distribution in the world would look like when you take from the rich and give to the poor. We employed iterative user testing techniques, including heuristic evaluation, scenarios, and think-aloud, throughout the development process to ensure the visualization met user needs.

Solution

The Robin Hood Taxation System taxes the world’s richest and redistributes directly to the people with the lowest income. The system is progressive and you as a user control the marginal rate of taxation for five different income brackets. This project contributes to inform and educating the public on social injustices. Try it out for yourselves here!
