Navigating social boundaries through interactive doorways
Challenge
The project’s design brief was to create new technologies to support introverted practices and support extroverts to navigate in a world where introversion is the new normal. The target group was students living in shared accommodation.
Process
The project followed the double-diamond process. First, semi-structured interviews were conducted to gather insights from our target group. We created an affinity diagram based on the interviews to identify the main themes. To ideate, we created personas and used ‘How might we…’ questions on each theme discovered in the previous step, and these were then used in a design charrette. The prototype was then developed using Figma and ProtoPie. User tests were made on the prototype using Wizard of Oz, Think Aloud, and lastly an interview.
Solution
We created an interactive light projection on doors in shared student accommodation in combination with an app to support easy communication. Flatmates can visually express their current social needs in order to achieve a balance between social and alone-time.
